Stena IceMAX is the world’s first dynamically positioned, dual mast ice-class drillship. The Stena IceMAX is a Harsh Environment DP Class 3 drillship capable of drilling in water depths up to 10, 000ft. The IceMAX has on-board 2 x BOP’s, each 18¾” x 15,000psi Cameron “TL” BOP c/w ST Locks, and uses Cameron Load King riser.
On September 25, 2020, Bahamas Petroleum Company (BPC) in May signed a drilling contract with Stena Drilling for a sixth-generation drilling rig, but it was not clear at the time which of the three - Stena IceMax, Stena Forth, or Stena DrillMax - drillships would be used. BPC expects to spud its first well offshore The Bahamas called Perseverance #1, in December 2020, using the Stena IceMAX drillship.
BPC,the Caribbean and Atlantic margin focused oil and gas company, with exploration, production, appraisal and development assets across the region, said that the Stena IceMAX was nominated as the drilling rig for the drilling and completion of the Perseverance #1 well. Simon Potter, Chief Executive Officer of BPC, said: "In March 2020, the company was within weeks of commencing the drilling of the Perseverance #1 well when compelled to defer operations due to the anticipated impacts of the Covid-19 pandemic.
"As might be expected when such an advanced well plan is halted so close to final implementation, major elements were already in train or sufficiently well established such that reactivation is a relatively straightforward matter. "With the clarity of the anticipated delivery date of the Stena IceMAX into the field this work can now be reactivated against a detailed timetable and progressed. I very much look forward to updating shareholders in the coming months as we get closer to drilling."
BPC has an obligation to drill an initial exploration well prior to the conclusion of the current exploration period of its four commercially conjoined licenses in the southern territorial waters of The Commonwealth of The Bahamas. That period was due to expire on 31 December 2020, but is extendable based upon the declaration of force majeure occasioned by the Bahamian and global response to the Covid-19 virus pandemic.
An interim force majeure extension of 3.5 months has already been agreed with The Government of The Bahamas, extending the term of the current exploration period to at least mid-April 2021. Given the force majeure event is currently ongoing, BPC expects that the ultimate force majeure extension will be extended to correspond with the period of the continuing state of emergency in The Bahamas.
The drillship is expected to arrive to the offshore location in December and will start drilling some 3-4 days after the arrival. "This means that if the rig arrival is on or shortly after the 15 December 2020 (as per Stena's current indication), Perseverance #1 would be expected to spud prior to Christmas 2020," BPC said.
The Perseverance #1 well is targeting recoverable P50 oil resources 0.77 billion barrels, with an upside of 1.44 billion barrels. The Stena IceMAX is a dynamically positioned, dual mast ice-class drillship, capable of drilling in water depths up to 10, 000ft (3,048m). Worth noting, Stena Drilling has recently secured more drilling work for the drillship. Following the completion of the drilling operations in the Bahamas, the Stena IceMax will move to Mexico where it will drill for the Spanish oil firm Repsol.
On September 22, 2020, Stena Drilling has won a drilling contract with Spanish oil company Repsol for operations offshore Mexico. Stena Drilling said in a social media update on Monday that its Stena IceMAX drillship has won the contract in Mexico. The rig will be used by Repsol – and its partners Petronas, Wintershall Dea, and PTTEP – for its 2021 drilling campaign in Block 29 located in the Salina Basin. The campaign is expected to start in May/June 2021, according to Stena’s update. “Stena Drilling is delighted to be working with Repsol and its partners, and look forward to completing a safe and efficient drilling campaign together”, the drilling contractor said.
Stena Drilling has found more work for its Stena IceMax drillship. The driller has signed a deal with an undisclosed operator which should see the 6th generation rig deployed on an approximately three-month long contract starting in the first quarter of 2020. The contract might start mid-January 2020, and end in the last week of April 2020.
The Stena IceMAX is currently on a contract with CNOOC. The Chinese oil company is using the drillship for exploration offshore Ireland. Prior to joining CNOOC this month, the drillship in February brought joy to ExxonMobil in Cyprus. Namely, the U.S. oil and gas giant used the Stena IceMax drillship when it discovered the giant gas discovery at the Glaucus-1 well in the Mediterranean Sea.
Exxon, which owns a 60 percent stake in the Block 10, said that based on preliminary interpretation of the well data, the discovery could represent an in-place natural gas resource of approximately 5 trillion to 8 trillion cubic feet (142 billion to 227 billion cubic meters).
Drillship Stena IceMAX awarded one-well contract with plus two 60-day options with CNOOC. The exploration drilling in offshore Ireland is expected to start in May end 2019 and would complete in Sept end 2019, for a duration of 129 days. The day rate is not disclosed. The drillship is warm stacked in United Kingdom in North Sea/Barents. Drillship’s previous project was with ExxonMobil which ended in Feb end 2019.
The Cyprus Ministry of Energy confirmed on November 16, 2018, that the U.S. oil major ExxonMobil has started drilling an exploration well offshore Cyprus.
The ministry said Exxon had started drilling the drilling of “Delphyne-1” well in Block 10, within the Exclusive Economic Zone of the Republic of Cyprus. Exxon is the operator of the Block 10, with its partner being Qatar Petroleum. The duo won the block as part of the third offshore licensing round in December 2016.
The U.S. company is using Stena Drilling’s Stena Icemax drillship for the Delphyne-1 drilling. Water depth at the site is 1.973 meters.
This well is the first of two well the Block 10 partners have committed to drill as part of the contract signed with the Cyprus government.
According to Exxon’s previous statements the contract includes a commitment from the ExxonMobil-Qatar Petroleum consortium to acquire 3-D seismic data (now completed), drill two exploration wells in the first license period, and work with the government of Cyprus to build skills and strengthen understanding of the petroleum business through focused training programs.
U.S. Assistant Secretary of State for Energy Resources Francis Fannon was in Cyprus on Friday where he met with the Cyprus Energy Minister Georgios Lakkotrypis.
Earlier on November 13, 2018, the Stena Icemax drillship arrived on location in Cyprus’ offshore Block 10, and prepared to bore down into the seabed, Energy Minister Giorgos Lakkotrypis said, early this week
The Stena Icemax vessel, leased by Exxon, had arrived on schedule at the first drilling target in Block 10. “Cyprus’ energy program, as it has been designed, is being implemented, it is going forward and will continue without fanfare,” he added.
According to reports, the Stena Icemax drillship reached its destination at the ‘Delfini’ target in Block 10 a little ahead of schedule, arriving there late on 11th Nov, 2018, evening.
Drilling was expected to start sometime over the next few days, and is expected to be completed around mid-December. The vessel will then immediately head out to a second drill site.
Daily Phileleftheros reports that early on Monday; 12th Nov, morning a team of government officials were flown aboard the drillship by helicopter. One of the support vessels had set out from the port of Limassol and was en route to rendezvous with the Stena Icemax.
Before on 10th Nov, 2018, the Cyprus government
issued a navigational telex (navtex) notification to seafarers on Saturday ahead of the arrival next week of Stena IceMax, a drilling ship commissioned by Exxon Mobil to explore for hydrocarbons in block 10 of Cyprus’ exclusive economic zone.
The drillship is expected to arrive within the next two days in the port of Limassol, with the competent authorities issuing the navtex marine advisory valid until February 25 for the target “Delphini”.
“The drilling rig is expected to arrive within the timeframe set, according to schedule, tomorrow or the day after,” a source told the Cyprus News Agency. According to the same source, “everything proceeds smoothly, according to plan.”
The navtex 376/18 issued by Cyprus at 6.00 am local time (4.00 am GMT), informs mariners about the drilling operations of Stena IceMax at the “Delphini” target. Drilling operations are expected to commence on November 15.
A safety zone of 500 meters is established around Stena IceMax and entering this area is prohibited for any reason, the CAN report said. Violation of
the safety zone will be considered as a criminal offence against the laws of the Republic of Cyprus and the 1982 UN Convention on the Law of the Sea, the navtex concludes.
On Friday, the Cyprus official government gazette published a decree issued by the Minister of Transport, aiming to safeguard both the rig and marine navigation during the drilling period.
Exxon Mobil was awarded, together with Qatar Petroleum the exploration licence in block 10 of Cyprus’ EEZ.
The area reserved by the Turkish navtex is located at the notional boundaries of the respective exclusive zones (EEZs) of Cyprus, Greece and Egypt. Due to political reasons, the three countries have officially not delineated their EEZs with respect to one another.
The reserved area also borders Cyprus’ offshore blocks 4 and 5, parts of which Turkey claims fall within its ‘continental shelf’. Turkey has repeatedly vowed to stop Cyprus from extracting and monetising its offshore gas reserves. The southeastern most tip of the area is approximately 100 km from the two sites in block 10 which ExxonMobil has earmarked for drilling.
Local media speculated that Turkey’s intent in deploying the Barbaros Hayreddin Pasa a Turkish seismic survey vessel was to convey a political message, namely making its presence felt in the area during the same time that ExxonMobil will be drilling exploratory wells for gas in block 10. The Barbaros Hayreddin Pasa will be conducting surveys in a sea area of 44,000 square kilometres and the Turkish navtex stated that the Barbaros will remain in the area until February 1.
