The offshore driller Seadrill Ltd. on March 04, 2021, said that its UDW drillship West Saturn gets more time with ExxonMobil offshore Brazil. In its recent fleet update, Seadrill confirms that ultra-deepwater drillship West Saturn will remain operating offshore Brazil until November 2021, after current operator ExxonMobil declared a one-well contract option. The rig, which had been due to finish up with the operator in June, is undertaking exploration drilling at the Opal and Titan prospects with the third well location to be confirmed.

Seadrill has entered into a new contract, an extension and received an LOA, adding USD 35.1 million over approximately 480 days to the total backlog, with good prospects for additional backlog on these units.

Seadrill on Jun 2nd, 2020, has issued an update on the status of its offshore rig fleet and market prospects. More recently, Seadrill secured a $48-million, two-well contract from ExxonMobil for the drillship West Saturn to operate offshore Brazil, including 2.5 years of continuous optionality.

According to reports, on January 12, 2021, the Oil major ExxonMobil is preparing to drill an exploration well in waters offshore Brazil, using Seadrill’s West Saturn drillship. ExxonMobil and Seadrill are preparing for the drilling campaign in the country and the West Saturn drillship is already located at block CM-789, in the Campos Basin. ExxonMobil is the operator of the exploration block CM-789 and has a 40 per cent interest with Petrobras and Qatar Petroleum as partners each holding a 30 per cent interest.

The rig arrived on location on 11 January and is undergoing tests over the next few days in preparation to start drilling operations at the Opal well over the upcoming weekend. Seadrill’s latest fleet status report, published in November 2020, shows that the West Saturn’s contract with ExxonMobil was scheduled to start this month. The rig’s day rate is $225,000.

The contract for the 2014-built drillship is scheduled

to end in July 2021 unless Exxon uses its options available under the contract which could keep the rig operating for the oil major until December 2023. ExxonMobil has also recently started drilling operations at the Bulletwood-1 well site on the Canje Block located offshore Guyana, using the Stena Carron drillship.

The West Saturn is a 6th generation ultra-deepwater drillship, built in 2014 and equipped to drill in water depths of up to 12,000 feet (3600 metres) with an operational history in offshore Africa. Seadrill has secured a firm contract for one well and one drill stem test with Statoil Brasil Óleo e Gas for the West Saturn in Brazil. The contract also includes a number of option wells to be drilled in blocks where Statoil has license and operatorship.

During the third quarter, Seadrill signed $260 million in new drilling contracts and extensions combined, securing work for six offshore drilling rig. Equinor exercised the first two of seven options for the West Saturn in Brazil, employing the unit until Q3 2019 and adding approximately $85 million to backlog.

The West Saturn is expected to commence

operations between December 2017 and January 2018. The backlog for the firm portion of the contract is expected to be approximately $26 million. The drillship will be upgraded with a managed pressure drilling (MPD) system, which is expected to be utilized as part of the upcoming work scope. The West Saturn represents the fifth unit managed by Seadrill equipped with MPD equipment.

Statoil Brasil Oleo e Gas Ltda has awarded Seadrill rig contracts for exploration drilling in the BM-S-8 license in the Santos basin. The agreement includes two contracts: Seadrill Offshore AS will provide the drillship West Saturn and Seadrill Serviços de Petroleo Limitada will provide services on board. The fixed contract scope includes one exploration well and one drill stem test, which are part of the license commitments of the exploration phase. The BM-S-8 license contains parts of the Carcará pre-salt oil discovery.

Updated commencement date for the contracts is planned between 1 December 2017 and 1 March 2018. Under the contract, Statoil intends to drill the independent Guanxuma prospect. Following the Guanxuma well, Statoil plans to perform a drill stem test on the Carcara discovery. In addition to the firm program, the contracts include options for seven more exploration wells. Statoil can exercise these options based on the results of the firm exploration program and may deploy the West Saturn across its Brazilian assets, given regulatory approval.

On July 12, 2017 Statoil announced an agreement that will increase the company’s interest in the BM-S-8 licence from 66% to 76%. Statoil has been present in Brazil for over 15 years and built a portfolio that includes the Peregrino field in Campos basin and assets in the exploration and development phase. In this period, the company has invested more than $10 billion, paid almost $1 billion of government take and employed more than 1,000 people either directly or indirectly.
