Operator:                     Neptune Energy

Odfjell Drilling and CIMC Raffles
on August 31, 2020, announced that Neptune Energy Norge has extended the contract for the Deepsea Yantai for 365 days with an additional 3 wells taking the rig to late 2021. The rig will conduct the second drilling phase of Neptune Energy’s Fenja field development project. In addition, the parties have agreed to increase the number of optional wells from the remaining five up to ten optional wells.

“The extension of the Deepsea Yantai is an acknowledgment of the excellent work performed by our team in the mobilisation, start-up and operation of the Deepsea Yantai, says CEO Simen Lieungh of Odfjell Drilling”. The Deepsea Yantai rig – formerly known as the Beacon Atlantic – is owned by China’s CIMC and managed by the Norwegian drilling contractor Odfjell Drilling.

The rig was used this summer to make the Dugong discovery. In August, Neptune claimed that it was the largest oil discovery in Norway so far this year. According to the company, the volumes are estimated to be in the range of 40 – 120 million barrels of oil equivalent (boe).

Neptune Energy initially hired the Deepsea Yantai under its original name, the Beacon Atlantic, in March 2019. Namely, the oil and gas firm chartered the rig from CIMC Raffles and drilling operations started in the fourth quarter of 2019. The estimated duration of the firm program of six wells under the deal was for 400 days. Neptune also had options to extend the contract for up to 10 more wells.

The semi Deepsea Yantai is a GM4D harsh environment design and is Odfjell Drilling's first rig of this design. The unit is designed for operations in harsh environments and at water depths of up to 1,200 m. The rig has full DP 3 station keeping and is ready for full mooring spread for operations in water depths of 70 to 500 metres. The loading capacity is 4,000 mtT in all operating conditions and the rig is fully winterized for operation in all waters including an arctic environment.

The rig has a state-of-the-art, highly efficient drilling system, which includes a 1 ½ derrick with offline capabilities to facilitate a number of simultaneous operations. The drilling system has an active heave compensating drawwork for increased performance, efficiency, safety and redundancy. The rig is designed for worldwide operation and will be especially suitable for operation in harsh environment.

On May 29, 2020, Petroleum Safety Authority (PSA), the Norwegian offshore safety body, has given its consent to Neptune Energy for production drilling on the Gjøa field off Norway using the Deepsea Yantai semi-submersible drilling rig. The PSA said that the consent was for production drilling on Gjøa, which lies in production licence 153. According to the PSA Norway the consent given for the drilling will take 240 days to complete.

Gjøa is a field in the northern part of the North Sea, 50 kilometers northeast of the Troll field. The water depth in the area is 360 metres. Production at the field started in 2010. The Deepsea Yantai semi-submersible drilling rig is managed by the Norwegian offshore drilling firm Odfjell Drilling AS. The Deepsea Yantai is a sixth-generation semi-submersible drilling rig delivered in 2019 by CIMC Raffles in China.

The drilling rig is owned by China's CIMC but is managed by the Norwegian drilling contractor Odfjell Drilling. The two companies last year signed a four-year management deal for the rig, under which Odfjell will also have the exclusive right to buy the rig and will have a right of first refusal on any offer to buy the rig following the exclusivity period.

According to Odfjell's fleet status report, the Deepsea Yantai should stay busy with Neptune until early 2021, with extension options available until mid-2022.

On December 6, 2019, Neptune Energy has received consent from Norwegian offshore safety body, the Petroleum Safety Authority (PSA), for exploration drilling of two wells in the North Sea using the Deepsea Yantai drilling rig. The wells, designated 35/9-15 (appraisal well) and 35/9-15A (sidetrack), belong to production license 153 in blocks 35/9 and 36/7.

Neptune Energy is the operator of the license and holds a 30 percent ownership interest. The remaining partners are Petoro with 30 percent, Wintershall with 28 percent, and OKEA holds the remaining 12 percent. The location where the wells will be drilled is in the northern North Sea, adjoining the Gjøa field in a water depth of 363 meters.

The PSA said on Friday that the drilling was scheduled to begin in December 2019 and was estimated to last for at least 56 days. As for the rig, the Deepsea Yantai is a semi-submersible drilling rig owned by Odfjell Drilling. The rig was built at the CIMC Raffles yard in China and was completed in 2016.

Neptune Energy hired the Deepsea Yantai, formerly named Beacon Atlantic, for up to 16 wells offshore Norway back in March 2019. Odfjell Drilling later that month, said it would employ more than 200 personnel in Norway for work on the Deepsea Nordkapp and Deepsea Yantai semi-submersibles, which joined the company’s fleet.

On 31st October at 9:45 pm. local time, Deepsea Yantai commenced the rig’s first drilling contract ever. The first well for Neptune Energy is at the Duva field (Production License 636) in block 36/7. The drilling programme awarded in March this year is now for eight fixed wells with eight optional wells.

Director Drilling and Wells in Neptune Energy in Norway, Thor Andre Løvoll, says: “This is an important milestone for us. The Deepsea Yantai rig mobilisation and start-up has been an impressive cooperation and teamwork between Odfjell Drilling and Neptune Energy. We are now on schedule and ready to commence drilling of the Duva-field, which will be developed through subsea tie-backs connecting two templates to the nearby Gjøa platform, operated by Neptune Energy Norge. “

First production from Duva is expected in late 2020 with total recoverable resources estimated to be 120 million barrels of oil equivalent (boe).

"I extremely satisfied with being able to mobilise Deepsea Yantai for Neptune Energy in line with our plan upon delivery of the unit in March this year, and I am even more impressed by the extensive efforts all our employees have shown to achieve this. I honour all our offshore employees, the onshore organisation and the project team organization for their great contribution both with the AoC and the final preparations for a safe an efficient operation for Neptune”, says Odfjell Drilling’s Rig Manager Steffen Kalvik.

Following commencement of Deepsea Nordkapp for Aker BP on 13 May this year, this is the second new harsh environment semisubmersible added to our fleet in 2019, making a total fleet of six semisubmersible units operating in the North Sea.

On June 12, 2019, Deepsea Yantai, a newbuild semi-submersible drilling rig destined for operations in Norway, has been launched in China. Chinese rig builder CIMC Raffles named and launched the rig on Wednesday, and the rig has already set sail for Norway where it will be used by Neptune Energy under a contract signed in March. Neptune Energy will use the Deepsea Yantai semi-submersible drilling rig for up to 16 wells offshore Norway.

Neptune Energy in February submitted development plans to Norwegian authorities for the Duva (PL636) and Gjøa P1 (PL153) projects in the Norwegian sector of the North Sea. The company now plans to use the rig to drill three development wells on the Duva field starting at the end of 2019. In addition, it may drill another three development wells in the northernmost part of the Gjøa field.

The rig -renamed from Beacon Atlantic to

Deepsea Yantai – will be managed by the Norwegian offshore drilling specialist Odfjell Drilling. The drilling operations are scheduled to start in the fourth quarter of the year. The estimated duration of the firm program of six wells is 400 days. Neptune will have options to extend the contract for up to 10 more wells.

Worth reminding, CIMC Raffles and Odfjell Drilling in March signed a four-year management agreement, under which Odfjell Drilling would manage and operate the rig – then referred to as Beacon Atlantic – on behalf of CIMC Raffles. The driller will also have the exclusive right to buy the rig and will have a right of first refusal on any offer to purchase the unit following the exclusivity period.

On 2019-March-20, CIMC Raffles and Odfjell Drilling has secured a drilling contract for Neptune Energy Norge by using the 6th generation harsh environment semisubmersible drilling unit “Beacon Atlantic” which will be renamed “Deepsea Yantai”.

On March 19th, 2019,CIMC Raffles Offshore ("CIMC Raffles") and Odfjell Drilling are pleased to announce that Neptune Energy Norge has awarded Deepsea Yantai a 6 wells firm drilling contract with 10 optional wells. The commencement of drilling operations in expected to be in Q4 2019. The estimated duration of the firm program is 400 days. CIMC Raffles and Odfjell Drilling are establishing a project team at the shipyard to prepare and mobilize for the operations in the North Sea.

CIMC Raffles and Odfjell Drilling has also agreed into partnership for various of aspects, CIMC Raffles will be preferred partner for Odfjell new building program, Odfjell Drilling will manage and operate the unit on behalf of CIMC Raffles based on terms and conditions customary for this type of agreements, Odfjell Drilling will market the drilling unit Deepsea Yantai. The agreement also secures Odfjell Drilling the exclusive right to purchase the unit and a right of first refusal on any offer to purchase the unit following the exclusivity period. CIMC Raffles and Odfjell Drilling are also agreed to market Deepsea Yantai’s sister unit for selected customers, this unit and Deepsea Yantai will form an integral part of Odfjell Drilling’s modern and high performing rig fleet.

Deepsea Yantai is of GM4-D design and is currently at CIMC Raffles yard in Yantai, China completing final commissioning and sea trials. CIMC Raffles has 80% intellectual property of the unit and is tailor-made for North Sea. The drilling unit is capable of harsh environment operation and is winterized for operation in Arctic areas. The unit is further designed for efficient operations with offline capability and active heave compensation system. The unit is currently classified by DNVGL to fulfil the world's most stringent Norsok standards.
